In a meta moment, I’d like to draw y’alls attention to the sidebar, where there is material which you may find  beneficial, like the Site Glossary and the Comments Policy. That stuff has been there for a while, but it seems like people haven’t really noticed it. So, now you know. The sidebar is a dynamic, living, and changing thing which occasionally has something neat, interesting, and relevant!

My Open Letter to Feministing has still not received a response from Feministing, although the ranks of the cosigners are growing. (Haven’t cosigned yet? Please do!) [Edited to add: received an email from Courtney shortly after this post went up.]

You know what really upsets me? When people wish rape on rapists so they “know what it feels like” or as some sort of eye for an eye thing. It’s not cool. I’m not the only person who thinks so.

Here’s a great discussion on why the fact that attendees of the Nestle Family conference got to ask some questions of slick executives is basically meaningless. (Also, for those who want a complete list of all the blog posts from activists related to the topic, here you go.)

Sexiling is a time-honored tradition of dorm life. Is that about to change?

Being a same sex couple without a legally recognized partnership? It’s not just depressing and frustrating and angering, it’s also expensive.

Via Kate Harding, some pretty damning evidence against the claim that Roman Polanski was tricked by a mean judge. Also, speaking of Kate Harding, can I talk for a minute about the fact that when I (and several others) called her on some ableist language she a. immediately understood what was wrong and b. responded personally to me* (to ME! KATE HARDING! ONE OF MY HEROES!) and addressed it. This, my friends, is how feminism should be done.

As long as people with disabilities are left by the side of the road to die after being hit by cars, I am going to continue saying that ableism is a huge problem which needs to be addressed.

“Friendly villagers get news from foreign lands.” Blerk. Hello, colonialism!

*To clarify (cover your eyes, Meridith!): several of us Tweeted her about a problematic Tweet, and I think that the reason she responded to me was because my Tweet was on top of the stack, not because she thought I was extra-special or anything. One more time, just for good  measure: Tweet! There, I’ve got it out of my system.

    1. the tweeting it kills me

And thanks for the link to the Curvature article. I’ve always felt intensely unsettled about the eye for an eye stance in a rape context and the vengance concept is an excellent one.
