Yellowed Thermostats

Happy Friday, everybody! You have probably noticed that the site has changed rather dramatically. I’m still experimenting with this, so I am curious to know if anyone encounters any problems. Or totally hates it. (I really, really, really liked the old look, I was just getting kinda bored.) Incidentally, if the white text on a black background makes your head explode, I highly recommend scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking “lighter.” I know that some of my readers have a tough time with light text on a dark background, so I made a more eye-friendly version of the theme. Please tell me if you think that the fonts/colors/etc of the light theme should be tweaked to make it easier to read!

Go read this story about transcultural/transracial adoption in The Stranger. Especially if you are thinking of adopting/have adopted transculturally. But even if you haven’t, it’s still a really good article about a really interesting issue which has not been getting the attention it deserves.

Joss Whedon in Mother Jones. What’s not to love?

When was the last time you trekked across Africa with a goatskin?

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! The BBC had pledged to reduce swearing.

Oh, what’s that I smell? A withdrawal deadline for American troops?

Thanksgiving is over, which means that it’s time to talk about the “War on Christmas” yet again!

  1. Happy Day-After-Thanksgiving! I like the new look of the website; that is to say, I like it better than yesterday’s style. But I like the style before THAT even more.

That said, the new style works for me when I click on “lighter”!

And more photos, all the time, please, they’re great!

  2. I’m finding the void to the left of the article text to be very disconcerting. It actually made it difficult for me to read, strangely. It didn’t seem to bother me as much in the lighter version. I would suggest retaining the [article][comments] layout from leafy so there isn’t so much dead space.

  3. I will take that under advisement. As you have probably noted, because you tend to notice these things, this is actually a two column layout which I have converted to a single. Maybe I’ll stretch out the column a little more for less white (er…black) space to the left. (Edit: I’ve removed some of the negative space on the left in accordance with Kremlin’s suggestion. Should I eliminate more, or has the readability problem been resolved?)

  4. The red hyperlinks and text is difficult to read .

    Anyone seen my glasses?

  5. i like the new layout a lot. it feels more roomy. though of course foliage is gorgeous, i really like what you’ve done with this. i find it very readable, too, and i like that you give options at the bottom. all in all, very well done. you run one of the tightest ships in the blogosphere, and this is just another excellent manifestation of this. so good!

  6. Maybe I’ll lighten the red up a bit…I like the interplay of red and black because it appeals to my inner goth (and I’m definitely not using blue). I’m not sure that another color would work well against the black, also.
