Sweet Inspirations

Peaches and I went to the Castro yesterday because we had a deep and driving need for cake, and she knew the place to get the hookup.

We found ourselves at Sweet Inspirations, which serves a variety of cakes both whole and by the slice. And…my God…the cake. I wanted to eat every single cake in the damn place. How can any rational person decide between Orange Dream Cake, Coconut Cake, Tirimisu, Raspberry Chocolate Torte, German Chocolate Cake, Pumpkin Cake with Cranberry Sauce, Blueberry and White Chocolate Tart…It was almost painful to survey the contents of the cake case and make a decision.

We ended up going with orange and coconut, and were quickly served up two massive slices of fluffy, multilayered, artfully decorated cake. Originally we had planned to get tea, but the weather was so warm that we went with Italian sodas instead: raspberry and kiwi.

The orange cake was rather dreamlike in construction, with layers of rich white fluffy cake that had an orange note to them sandwiched between airy frosting and candied mandarin slices. The frosting was the sort that is rich, but not too heavy, and complements the cake like a loving kiss. The mandarins were sweet and syrupy and perfect, whole slices of deliciousness that oozed their flavour through every slice.

The coconut cake was fantastic. It has raspberry goo in it as well as coconut, so there were layers of white cake, coconut frosting with toasted coconut in it, and thick laces of raspberry goo. Coconut and raspberry happen to be two of my favourite fruit flavors ever, so it was certainly a match made in heaven.

Mmm…cake. I have a feeling that this will be a frequent destination for us, and that eventually the entire deli case will be reviewed here. Meanwhile…I dream of tirimisu.
